{"id":2317,"date":"2019-11-08T11:22:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T05:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2317"},"modified":"2019-11-08T11:22:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T05:52:05","slug":"new-type-of-hiv-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/new-type-of-hiv-discovered\/","title":{"rendered":"New Type of HIV Discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a major discovery, US-based healthcare\ncompany Abbott has discovered a new subtype of Human Immunodeficiency Virus\n(HIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>HIV-1 Group M, Subtype L<\/strong>\nis the newest discovery that is published in the Journal of Acquired Immune\nDeficiency Syndromes (JAIDS). <\/li><li>The discovery was made using\nthe next-generation of genome sequencing techniques.<\/li><li>As per the researchers, this is\nfor the first time a new subtype of Group M HIV has been discovered and a new\nsubtype after 20 years. <\/li><li>Group M is responsible for the\nglobal pandemic which can be traced back to the Democratic Republic of Congo\n(DRC). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HIV Toll<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Globally, since the beginning\nof the pandemic, 75 million people have been infected with HIV and 37.9 million\nare living with the virus today.<\/li><li>The new discovery shows that\nthe global health community should remain vigilant for new strains despite the\nefforts to reduce the impact of the pandemic.<\/li><li>Also, the discovery will help\npave the way for new treatment regimes and making the existing treatment\nregimes to work effectively.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genetic Sequencing <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Abbott says that, for\nidentifying a new virus to be the subtype of HIV, they have studied three\nsamples. <\/li><li>Two samples from DRC collected\nin the 1980s and 1990s and a third collected in 2001. <\/li><li>Due to the non-availability of\ntechnology at that time, the virus could not be identified. <\/li><li>Now, the researchers have used\nNext-generation sequencing technology&nbsp;which allowed the researchers to\nbuild the entire genome at a faster pace and at low costs.<\/li><li>A researcher from the Global\nViral Surveillance Programme of Abbott said that they have used new techniques\nto identify the virus portion of the sample and fully sequence the genome. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global Viral Surveillance Programme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The programme was formed by\nAbbott to monitor HIV and hepatitis viruses and identify their mutations to\nupdate the diagnostic tests of the company up to date. <\/li><li>As part of the programme,\nAbbott collected 75,000 samples of HIV and Hepatitis from across the world,\nidentified 5000 strains and published 125 research papers. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News In a major discovery, US-based healthcare company Abbott has discovered a new subtype of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
