{"id":2308,"date":"2019-11-07T16:18:18","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T10:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2308"},"modified":"2019-11-08T09:54:45","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T04:24:45","slug":"national-health-profile-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/national-health-profile-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"National Health Profile 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In\nNews <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI) has released the\nNational Health Profile (NHP) 2019 and it is a sobering state of Indian health\nwith some things to cheer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The information that NHP\nprovides is essential for health system policy development and governance,\nhealth research, health education, training and human resource development. <\/li><li>It covers indicators such as\nsocio-economic, demographic, health status, health finance, human resources and\nhealthcare infrastructure.<\/li><li>It allows for evidence-based\ninterventions by the government and the effective implementation of various\nprogrammes.<\/li><li>It is also one of the few\nreports that provide a detailed profile of the prevalence of communicable and\nnoncommunicable diseases in the country. <\/li><li>Here are some important\ninsights from NHP 2019.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sex\nRatio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per NHP, the country has\nregistered an improvement in sex ratio. <\/li><li>For every 1000 males, there are\n943 females in 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio was 933. <\/li><li>In rural areas, it has\nincreased to 949 from 946.<\/li><li>In urban areas, it is an\nincrease of 29 points from 900 to 929.<\/li><li>Kerala has the highest sex\nratio for the total population &#8211; 1084, it is 1078 for rural areas and 1091 for\nurban areas.<\/li><li>Chandigarh has the lowest sex\nratio in rural areas at 690.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Birth\nand Death Rate <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the report, there is a\ndecline in birth and death rate in the country.<\/li><li>From 25.8 in 2000, the birth\nrate declined to 20.4 in 2016. Similarly, the death rate declined to 6.4 per\n1000 population from 8.5 over the same period. <\/li><li>Also, the natural growth rate\ndeclined from 17.3 in 2000 to 14 in 2016.<\/li><li>In 2017, the birth rate was 20.2\nper 1000 population and the death rate was 6.3. <\/li><li>The natural growth rate was\n13.9.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Total\nFertility Rate <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>TFR or Total Fertility Rate\nthat is the average number of children that will be born to a woman during her\nlifetime has fallen in 12 states below the two-child norm. <\/li><li>Nine states have replacement\nlevels of 2.1 or above.<\/li><li>The lowest fertility rate is\namong Delhi, Kerala and West Bengal.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life\nExpectancy <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>From 49.7 years in 1970-75, the\nlife expectancy in the country has increased to 68.7 years in 2012-16. <\/li><li>In the same period, it is 70.2\nfor females and 67.4 years for males. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Population\nDensity <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The highest population density\nis in Delhi NCR with 11,320 people per square kilometre. <\/li><li>The lowest is in Arunachal\nPradesh at 17 per square kilometre.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demographics\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the survey, there\nis a high incidence of the young and economically active population in the\ncountry. <\/li><li>In 2016, 27% of the estimated\npopulation is below 14 years.<\/li><li>The majority of the population\n&#8211; 64.7% &#8211; is in the age group of 15-59 years. This is an economically active\ngroup.<\/li><li>The elderly population in the\nage group of 60-85 is 8.5% of the total population.<\/li><li>The survey notes that despite a\ndecline in birth rate and natural growth rate, the population of the country is\nincreasing. This is because the decline in birth rate is not as rapid as the\ndeath rate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infant\nMortality Rate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)\ndeclined to 33 per 1000 live births in 2016. But there is a gap in rural and\nurban areas. <\/li><li>While it is 37 in rural areas,\nin urban areas it is 27. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-Communicable\nDiseases <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the report, of the total\ndisease burden of the country, non-communicable diseases (NCD) dominate over\ncommunicable diseases.&nbsp; <\/li><li>The survey notes that, of the\n6.51 crore people who visited an NCD clinic, 4.75% of them have diabetes, 6.19%\nhave hypertension, 0.3% are diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases, 0.26% have\ncommon cancers and 0.10% are diagnosed with a stroke.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicable\nDiseases <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>On the communicable diseases,\nthe survey noted that the prevalence of malaria has declined in the country\nbetween 2012 and 13. But, there was a rise in 2014 and 2015 and began to\ndecline from 2015. <\/li><li>The number of deaths due to\nmalaria was high (77,140 cases and 26 deaths) in Chattisgarh, the report noted.<\/li><li>Other communicable diseases\nlike Dengue and Chikungunya, are a great public health threat to India, the\nreport noted.<\/li><li>The diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes\nare adding to the healthcare burden of the country. <\/li><li>In 2014, there was a\nconsiderable decrease in swine flu cases\/deaths compared to 2012 and 2013. But,\nit increased sharply in 2015 and decreased again in 2016. In 2017 and 18, there\nwas an increase again. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accident\nDeaths <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the survey, 4.13 lakh\npeople died due to accidental injuries in 2015 and 1.33 lakh people due to\nsuicide in the same year. <\/li><li>The suicide deaths are a cause\nfor concern as it is significantly high among the young population of the\ncountry. 44,593 suicide cases were reported for the age group of 30-45 years. <\/li><li>Death due to snake bites &#8211; 1.64\nlakh.<\/li><li>There are 2.68 crore disabled\npersons in the country.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human\nResources <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the health manpower data\nof the NHP, there are 11,54,686 allopathic doctors in the country up to 2018.<\/li><li>The total registered Dental\nsurgeons are at 2,54,283 and an increasing trend has been noted between 2007\nand 2018. <\/li><li>The registered AYUSH Doctors in\nthe country as of January 2018 was 7,99,879<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health\nSpend As a % of GDP <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>According to the survey, public\nhealth spend as a % of GDP has increased by just a few percentage points\nbetween 2009-10 and 2017-18.<\/li><li>While it was 1.12% of GDP in\n2009-10, it is 1.28% in 2017-18. The increase is a meager 0.16 %. <\/li><li>In nominal terms, from Rs 621\nin 2009-10, it has increased to Rs 1,657 in 2017-18.<\/li><li>The report also points to\ninequity in access to healthcare in the country.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From the data provided by the NHP 2019, not all things rosy with the\nstatus of Indian healthcare. The most shocking thing is the low levels of public\nhealth expenditure at a time when the government is claiming to provide\nUniversal Health Coverage through Ayshman Bharat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the report, the per capita public healthcare expenditure of\nthe country is $16. Compare this with Norway\u2019s $6,366, Japan\u2019s $3,538, and\nBrunei Darussalam\u2019s $ 599 (the data is sourced from the Global Health\nExpenditure Database of the World Health Organisation).
