{"id":2304,"date":"2019-10-30T11:39:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T06:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2304"},"modified":"2024-06-06T15:31:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T10:01:21","slug":"flood-risk-for-36-million-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/flood-risk-for-36-million-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Flood Risk for 36 Million In India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto a new scientific study, about 36 million people in India face flood risk.\nThis is an increase from the previous estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The study was conducted by Climate Centre, an\nindependent organisation of scientists and journalists working on climate\nchange, and is published in the scientific journal <em>Nature Communications<\/em>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the study, the number of people\naffected by rising sea levels in India has been underestimated by as much as\n88%. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With its new modelling approach, the study\nestimates that 36 million Indians will face annual flooding by 2050 and 44\nmillion by 2100 if emissions are not reduced. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As against 2.8 million of the previous\nestimates, 21 million people are expected to live below the high-tide line.\nThese are areas where the sea reaches the farthest into the land at high tide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>For the study, a new software called\nCoastalDEM has been used. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currently, detailed maps of the globe taken\nby the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) are used to estimate flood prone\nareas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The SRTM travelled aboard space shuttle\nEndeavour in 2000. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The images of the SRTM determined the\nelevation of the earth\u2019s topography and helped in estimating the flood risk\nareas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, this approach overestimated the\nelevation as it uses more variables like vegetation cover, population indices\netc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, as per researchers, CostalDEM is more\naccurate. It reduces the linear vertical bias from 4.71 m to less than 0.06 m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Live In BTL\nAreas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the study, nearly 110 million people\nacross the world live in areas below the current high tide lines and 250\nmillion live on land below flood annual flood levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SRTM based estimates put the numbers at 28\nmillion and 65 million which are far lower. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apart from India, there is an underestimation\nof numbers for countries like China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, and\nThailand. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally,\nthere is a mean sea level rise of 11-16 cm in the 20th century due to climate\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is expected to reach 2m by the end of the century. In such a scenario, this flood risk assessment study is important. It shows how cities, economies, regions and the world can get reshaped. It also raises the question of, how long countries can protect their people with coastal defences as the sea levels tend to rise drastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News According to a new scientific study, about 36 million people in India face flood risk.
