{"id":2277,"date":"2019-10-16T12:23:16","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T06:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2277"},"modified":"2024-06-07T16:38:03","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T11:08:03","slug":"the-nobel-prize-for-physics-awarded-to-three-astronomers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-nobel-prize-for-physics-awarded-to-three-astronomers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nobel Prize for Physics Awarded To Three Astronomers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Three astronomers James Peebles, Michel Mayor,\nand Didier Queloz won Nobel Prize for Physics 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their Discovery <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The prize is awarded for their\nresearch that helped us understand our place in the Universe. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>James Pebbles, the\nCanadian-American cosmologist won the prize for his theoretical work that\nhelped us understand the aftermath of Big Bang. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz won\nthe prize for their discovery of an exoplanet that changed the notion of how\nplanets were perceived. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peebles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Peebles used theoretical\nphysics and calculations to interpret the aftermath of the big bang. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He focused largely on Cosmic\nMicrowave Background (CMB) radiation which is electromagnetic radiation that is\nnow substantially cooled after the big bang.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1964, radio astronomers\nPenzias and Robert Wilson detected CMB through detectors which led to their\nNobel in 1978. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, they later found that\nPeebles had already theorized about CMB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the work of Peebles that\nmade us understand how matter is created and later led to galaxies and galaxy\nclusters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through his work we now know\nthat Universe is 5% matter, 26% dark matter and 69% is dark energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exoplanets <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>While space telescopes like Kepler and Hubble are finding exoplanets frequently now, the first exoplanet was discovered only inn1992. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz made their discovery in 1995. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They discovered an exoplanet orbiting a star 50 light years away called 51 Pegasus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The planet is named 51 Pegasus b.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a spectrograph, ELODIE, Mayor and his team observed the \u201cDoppler effect\u201d of the planet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doppler effect is when the star wobbles as an effect of a planet\u2019s gravity on it observed light.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The planet was a hot gas giant. Until then gas giants were presumed to be cold worlds and formed far away from the star. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The discovery started a revolution in astronomy and more and more planets are being discovered now. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News Three astronomers James Peebles, Michel Mayor, and Didier Queloz won Nobel Prize for Physics 2019.
