{"id":2274,"date":"2019-10-16T12:05:41","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T06:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2274"},"modified":"2024-06-06T15:13:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:43:33","slug":"comprehensive-national-nutrition-survey-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/comprehensive-national-nutrition-survey-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey Released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare\nhas released the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) 2016-18. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per CCNS, Indian children\nare facing the double risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diabetes, hypertension, kidney\ndiseases, high cholesterol are rising among the children. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Report<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the government, the\nreport is the largest micronutrient survey conducted in the world. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the first time in India,\ngold standard methods were used to assess anemia, micronutrient deficiencies,\nand prevalence of non-communicable diseases among children. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The data from the report notes\nthe shifting conditions of undernutrition, overweight, and obesity among\nchildren in the age group of 0-19 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Assessment <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Children and adolescents with\nabdominal obesity increase with the level of schooling of the mother and the\nwealth of the household. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The highest percentage of\nabdominal obesity was measured in children from Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and\nGoa with 7% each.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lowest percentage was\nobserved in Bihar. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The highest abdominal obesity\nin adolescents was observed in Delhi at 7% followed by Tamil Nadu at 6%. The\nlowest was observed in Assam at 0.2%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the survey, 8% of\nchildren in the age group of 5-9 and 6% of adolescents had high subscapular\nskinfold thickness. This is assessed to evaluate nutritional status. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The setting where children grow\nhas also an impact. There is a high prevalence among children in urban areas\nthan in rural areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Largest prevalence was is Goa\nat 21% and Delhi at 15%. Lowest is in Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh at 3%. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among adolescents lowest\nprevalence was in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Assam at 2%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On Breast-feeding <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The survey observed that in\nurban areas there is poor breast feeding. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reasons are long commute of\nthe working mothers, lifestyle, and prosperity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In rural areas, children suffer\nfrom stunting, wasting and underweight, and low consumption of milk products. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>83% of children in the age\ngroup of 12-15 months in rural areas are breastfed compared to 76% in urban\nareas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This clearly shows that\nhousehold wealth is inversely promotional to breastfeeding. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron Deficiency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Also, there is a high iron\ndeficiency in urban children than in rural children. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40.6% of urban children are\niron deficient while it is only 29% among rural children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experts say that this is due to\nbetter performance of government programs in rural areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vitamin D Deficiency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The same is the case with\nVitamin D deficiency in urban children though there is a higher level of diary\nconsumption in urban areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While the deficiency is 19% in\nurban areas, it is 12 % in rural areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, in rural areas, there is\nhigh zinc deficiency which causes growth retardation, impaired immune function,\ndiarrhea, and loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The double risk among Indian children does not augur well for their future and for the future of the country.
