{"id":2245,"date":"2019-09-26T10:49:34","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T05:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2245"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:59:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:29:21","slug":"warmest-period-on-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/warmest-period-on-record\/","title":{"rendered":"2015-19: The Warmest Period on Record"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report released at the <strong>United Nations Climate\nAction Summit 2019 being held in New York<\/strong>, the period 2015-19 is the\nwarmest period on record, and July 2019 was the hottest month on record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Science Advisory Group of the Summit\nprepared <strong>the report titled \u2018United in Science\u2019<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the report, countries like <strong>the United\nStates, Southern America, Europe, Middle East, areas in Africa south of the\nSahara, northern Eurasia and Australia <\/strong>have suffered the most during this\nfive-year period. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this period, greenhouse gas emissions have\nreached an all-time high and <strong>heat waves<\/strong> have become the <strong>deadliest\nclimate hazards<\/strong> while <strong>largest economic losses<\/strong> were due to <strong>tropical\ncyclones<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The report noted that the <strong>global temperatures<\/strong>\nfor the 2015-2019 period is 1.1 degrees more than pre-industrial (1850-1900)\nlevels. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This has led to extreme heatwaves, droughts,\nfloods and severe tropical cyclones. They have impacted the socio-economic\ndevelopment and environment. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> have reached a\nnew high. As per the report, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has crossed the\n400 parts per million (ppm) mark. Last time such levels of CO2 was noted 3\nmillion years ago. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report noted that, in 2018, CO2 levels in\nthe atmosphere were at 407.8 ppm, 2.2 ppm more than in 2017. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per preliminary observations, in 2019, CO2\nconcentrations are on track to reach 410 ppm in the atmosphere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2017, the global average of CO2 in the\natmosphere was 405.6 ppm, methane was at 1859 ppb, and nitrous oxide was at\n329.9 ppb. The values were 146%, 257% and 122% higher than in pre-industrial\ntimes (pre-1750). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report further notes that while emissions\nfrom the US and Europe have declined in the last decade, China\u2019s emissions are\nstarting to decline over the year 2000 levels of emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is growing its emissions at a strong rate\nof 5% per year while starting from a low per capita emissions. The country\nstands fourth in emissions across the world. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On <strong>heatwaves<\/strong>, the report notes that they\nhave affected all the continents and had set many national records for maximum\ntemperatures. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It says that the 2019 summer was unprecedented.\nFor the first time, wildfires in the Arctic were intensified leading to 50\nmegatons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate change impact has also been seen in the <strong>precipitation<\/strong>\nlevel in 2015-19. During the period, high precipitation was noted that previous\nyears in southern South and North America, eastern Europe and most of Asia.\nBut, less precipitation was noted in large areas of Europe, northern North\nAmerica, South and South West regions of Africa, a large part of South America,\nIndian Monsoon Region, and Northern and Western Australia. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was between 2015 and 2019 that low Arctic\nwinter sea ice extent was noted. Four times it had occurred during this period.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Arctic sea ice declined at a rate of 12% per\ndecade from 1978-2018.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All these indicate a climate future that is\ngoing to be disastrous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UN Climate Action Summit 2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change is a common concern of humanity.
