IIT-Bombay researchers have identified a bacterial strain from\nthe campus that will remove pesticide carbaryl from the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Carbaryl pesticide is a known carcinogen but is widely used in\nthe agriculture sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is persistent in nature and it pollutes both soil and water\necosystems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bacterial strain isolated from the campus uses carbaryl as\nits carbon and nitrogen source for growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research team also identified the metabolic pathway in the\nbacteria that are involved in the bioremediation process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pseudomonas<\/em> Genus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The bacterial species is yet to be identified but it comes under Pseudomonas<\/em>\ngenus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is found that the bacteria can grow in a supplemented medium\nwith a high concentration of carbaryl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metabolism <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The bacteria secrete an enzyme \u2018carbaryl hydrolase\u2019 which\nbreakdown carbaryl into \u20181-naphthol\u2019 and \u2018methylamine\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-naphthol is used as a carbon source while methylamine is used\nas a nitrogen source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers note that there are bacterial species like\nRhodococcus, Arthrobacter that degrade carbaryl but the new strain is\nhighly efficient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will completely degrade the pesticide in 12-12 hours which is\nfour times faster than other bacterial strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special Genes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The team also found that the bacteria have special genes to\ndegrade carbaryl and are of the opinion that it might have got the genes from\nother microbes that are capable of degrading carbaryl. That is through \u2018horizontal gene transfer\u2019 than\nvertical gene transfer which is from parents to offsprings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers have also found that the bacteria have adapted\nthemselves to new pesticides that are recently introduced. This is both through\nhorizontal gene transfer and evolving their own genes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Identification of such bacteria will help in reducing soil pollution due to overuse of pesticides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
