{"id":2212,"date":"2019-09-12T14:29:57","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T08:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2024-06-06T14:36:50","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:06:50","slug":"a-toolbox-to-forecast-drought-launched-at-unccd-meet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/a-toolbox-to-forecast-drought-launched-at-unccd-meet\/","title":{"rendered":"A Toolbox to Forecast Drought Launched at UNCCD Meet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 14th Conference of Parties to the United Nations\nConvention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) being held at Delhi NCR, a <strong>\u2018Drought\nToolbox\u2019 <\/strong>that will forecast an impending drought has been launched. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The toolbox will not only forecast a future\ndrought but will also suggest ways to mitigate its impact of acute water\nscarcity. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any country can use the toolbox to assess its\ndrought conditions and prepare in advance for water shortage. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Drought Toolbox uses 30 parameters such as\nsoil moisture, temperature and rainfall data of the past and the present, etc. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It provides a range of tools and solutions based\non three key pillars: monitoring and early warning, vulnerability and risk\nassessment, and risk mitigation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The drought monitoring an early warning systems\nwill track, assess, monitor and provide information regarding the hydrological\ncycle, water supply conditions and trends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The toolbox can accurately point out drought\nrisk across geographical regions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Already 70 countries have shown their interest\nto use the toolbox. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will also help countries to fine-tune their\nnational drought policies and be better prepared to tackle drought conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Need<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A tool for forecasting droughts and minimise\ntheir impacts was thought long ago. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Droughts have a wider socio-economic impact on\npeople. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is estimated that between 2005-15 the global\neconomic loss due to droughts was $29 billion. But, it has now risen to $80\nbillion per year. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have caused loss of food grains which\notherwise could have fed 81 million people every day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the World Bank study, droughts are four\ntimes costlier than floods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, a two-degree rise in temperature in the\nfuture will put the lives of 441 million people in danger due to droughts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thus the need for a forecasting toolbox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was only in the last two years that many\ncountries have suggested the UNCCD come up with a template for the toolbox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNCCD along with other UN Organisations such as\nthe Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Meteorological\nOrganisation (WMO) and the University of Nebraska in the US joined hands to\ndevelop the toolbox. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SDG Goal <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Prevalence of drought hampers achieving SDG-15\nof Sustainable Development Goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It calls for taking care of the land through\nproper management of forests, combating desertification and restoration of\ndegraded land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drought has a direct relation to desertification\nand land degradation. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the recent summer months, most parts of the country have faced droughts. Some were mild while others were severe. Women were the most vulnerable groups due to droughts as they are culturally ascribed to fetching water from long distances.  The Drought Toolbox developed by UNCCD with its advance forecasting will come in handy for countries like India and other low- and middle-income countries. Preparations can be made in advance to avert any life-threatening situations. It will help the policymakers to be proactive towards drought and reduce its impact on their citizens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News At the
