{"id":2208,"date":"2019-10-22T16:30:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2024-06-07T17:53:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T12:23:46","slug":"national-animal-disease-control-programme-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/national-animal-disease-control-programme-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"National Animal Disease Control Programme Launched"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) which aims\nto eliminate Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis among cattle in the\ncountry was launched recently by Prime\nMinister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>FMD and Brucellosis are the most common diseases\naffecting livestock in the country. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India, with over 125 crore livestock population\ncannot afford to persist with these diseases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many rural families are dependent on livestock\nfor additional income. The diseases render the livestock unproductive and\ncreate loss to the people. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, many countries have banned dairy and meat\nexports from the country citing the prevalence of these two diseases in the\ncounty. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NADCP is thus aimed at eliminating FMD and\nBrucellosis amongst livestock in the country. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NADCP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The programme aims to vaccinate 500 million\ncattle heads against FMD. This includes goats, sheep, buffaloes, cattle and\npigs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>36 million female bovine calves will be\nvaccinated for Brucellosis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NADCP is 100% centrally funded scheme.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total cost of the programme is Rs. 12,500\ncrores for five years till 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The programme is looking to control the two\ndiseases by 2025 and eliminate them by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foot and Mouth Disease <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>FMD is a viral disease that occurs commonly in\ncloven-hooved ruminants like cattle, goats, sheep and pigs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is generally not fatal in adult animals but\nwill make them weakened and reduces the production of milk thus financially\naffecting the farmers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fevers, sores in the mouth, on the teats and\nbetween the hooves appear in infected animals. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FMD virus is spread through the secretions\nof the animals and also the animals exhale the virus. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>World Organisation for Animal Health, an\nintergovernmental organisation that looks after prevention of animal diseases\nand improving their health, states that FMD is endemic to limited areas of the\nworld &#8211; some parts of Asia, most of Africa and the middle east. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regions like Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia,\ncentral and Northern America, Western Europe and the whole of Latin America are\nfree of the disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Controlling the outbreaks of the disease\nincludes controlled introduction of new animals into the existing herds,\nregular cleaning and disinfection of livestock areas, reporting the illness,\nand implementing effective vaccination strategies. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brucellosis <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>This is a zoonotic disease and is endemic to\nmost parts of the country. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It causes early abortions and prevents the\nintroduction of new calves into the animal population. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WHO recommends vaccination of the cattle to\ncontrol the disease. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As part of the NADCP, every female cattle and\ncalves in the age group of 4-8 months will be vaccinated once in their\nlifetime. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cattle play a crucial role in the rural economy. The framing community gets additional income by selling dairy products. The NADCP programme will thus help farmers secure their incomes and help animals from distress.
