India accounts for the largest number of such deaths\nat 2.3 lakh per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>An estimated 8 lakh people commit suicide every\nyear which accounts for 1 death every 40 seconds. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report also gives an insight that for every\nsuccessful suicide there are 20 failed attempts. This shows that suicide deaths\nare preventable if the distress is identified early and proper counseling\nsessions are provided. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More suicide deaths are noted in the age group\nof 15-29 years old. In fact, suicide is the second-largest killer in this age\ngroup. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While road injury is the largest killer for men\nin the age group, maternal mortality is the largest killer in women of this\ngroup. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regional Spread<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Europe tends to register the maximum number of\ndeaths against a global average of 10.53 deaths due to suicide for 100,000\npopulation. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eastern Mediterranean region reports the lowest\naverage. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, there are disparities within the region.\nFor instance, both India and Pakistan are included in the south-east Asia\nregion but Pakistan accounts for an average of 3 per 100000 population (in\n2016) and India accounts for 18.5. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Mental disorders like depression and alcoho use\nhave already been established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as reasons\nfor suicide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crisis situation and an individual\u2019s inability\nto cope with them has been identified as the reason for suicides in many cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WHO states that the strongest risk factor for\nsuicide is a previous suicide attempt. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methods of Suicide<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the data, 20% of suicides are due to\npesticide poisoning. This points to the setting where the suicides occur. In\nlow and middle-income countries it is in the rural agricultural areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hanging and firearms are other common methods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India Scenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the data, 2.3 lakh suicide deaths s are\nreported every year in the country that is a person commits suicide every 4\nminutes in the country. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this regard, implanting National Suicide\nPrevention Strategy is the need of the hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A draft in this regard was submitted to the\nMinistry of Health and Family Welfare in 2018. It is yet to be approved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It details ways on how to prevent suicide. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It outlines ways to prevent access to means of\nsuicide. For example, it calls for banning pesticides and safer storage of\npesticides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The strategy also calls for reducing alcohol\navailability and consumption for reduced suicide rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, it calls for selective intervention such\nas reaching to those at risk through crisis lines, implementing school mental\nhealth programmes, training gatekeepers etc. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For those who have already attempted suicide,\nthe strategy calls for indicative intervention for 18 months. This will reduce\nthe chances of re-attempting. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth and women are vulnerable groups who attempt suicide.\nPreventing domestic violence, empowering women and women education will help\nreduce suicides in women. For youth, improving their resilience through life\nskills and health-seeking behaviour will help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the support system of the family plays a crucial role in preventing suicide. Parents should not put unnecessary pressure on children with their expectations.
