{"id":2134,"date":"2019-08-28T11:56:49","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T06:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2134"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:34:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:04:35","slug":"india-planning-to-rejuvenate-5mn-hectares-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/india-planning-to-rejuvenate-5mn-hectares-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"India Planning To Rejuvenate 5mn Hectares By 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has pledged that\nIndia will rejuvenate 50 lakh hectares (5mn hectares) of degraded land between\n2021 and 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The announcement comes ahead of the Conference\nof Parties (CoP-14) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification\n(UNCCD)&nbsp;to be hosted by India in September. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is for the first time that India is hosting\nCoP of UNCCD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experts from 90 countries will attend the\nconference and explore ways to combat desertification of the planet. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indian Scenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>India is facing a severe crisis of land\ndegradation. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>96.4 million hectares or 29% of the land in the\ncountry is considered to be degraded. That is these lands or soils are unfit\nfor cultivation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In January 2019, India joined the Bonn Challenge\nwhere it pledged to rejuvenate 13 million hectares of degraded and deforested\nland by 2020 and an additional 8 hectares by 2030. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bonn Challenge seeks restoration of degraded and\ndeforested land across the globe &#8211; 150 million hectares by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The challenge is voluntary in nature. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s pledge is the largest in Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How The Change Is Brought About?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the Environment Ministry, schemes like\nPradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, Soil\nHealth Card Scheme and Soil Management Scheme act as an impetus to land or soil\nrestoration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government will undertake forest restoration\nas well as cultivable land restoration as part of the challenge. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Land Degradation <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per UNCCD, land degradation means reduction or loss of biological activity of the land or economic productivity of the land that is resulting due to land use or any other human activities or processes or a combination of processes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India, land degradation is happening at a faster pace leading to loss of biodiversity, low agricultural productivity, affecting water quality, threatening sustainable development, and overall well-being of both humans and animals. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil erosion is the major reason for degradation in the country. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This can exacerbate the effects of climate change by manifold. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> As a signatory to the UNCCD, India is bound to achieve degradation neutral status by 2030. That is, an increase in land degradation would be offset by the gains in land reclamation <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> In this scenario, the announcement by the Ministry is timely and efforts are on to
