{"id":2125,"date":"2019-08-27T14:39:31","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T09:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2125"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:29:55","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T10:59:55","slug":"india-calls-for-otter-protection-at-cop-18-of-cites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/india-calls-for-otter-protection-at-cop-18-of-cites\/","title":{"rendered":"India Calls For Otter Protection At COP 18 of CITES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>India along with Nepal and Bangladesh has moved a proposal at the\nConference of Parties 18 (CoP 18) of the Convention on International Trade in\nEndangered Species (CITES) to prohibit international trade of a species of\nOtter found in the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 100 nations supported the proposal and voted in favour to\nend the commercial trade of the species. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Acting within the framework of the international\nconvention, India, Nepal and Bangladesh moved the proposal which was voted in\nfavour by 102 countries, 15 against and 11 abstaining. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The CoP 18 of CITES is being held at Geneva,\nSwitzerland. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Smooth-coated Otter (<em>Lutrogale\nperspicillata<\/em>) is commonly found in India and many other Asian countries. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vote will now move the species from Appendix\nII of CITES convention to Appendix I. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per a report by AFP, the population of\nsmooth-coated otters in the wild has fallen by 30%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In countries like Japan, these animals are kept\nas cute pets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The species is considered to be facing a high\nrisk of extinction and is being affected by international trade. It is also\nfacing habitat loss and degradation due to its conflict with humans especially\nfishermen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Man-made changes to aquatic habitats, poaching,\nillegal trade for pets, fur and medical uses, are threatening the species to go\nextinct. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CITES Appendices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Appendix I of CITES include species that are\nthreatened with extinction and international trade is allowed only in\nexceptional cases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appendix II species have comparatively lower\nprotection and Appendix III consists of species that are protected in at least\none country, which has asked CITES Parties for assistance in controlling trade.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tokay Gecko <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Another proposal was made by India is to include\nTokay Gecko (<em>Gekko Gecko<\/em>) to Appendix II. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The species is facing threats from hunting and\ntrade for traditional medicinal use. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This proposal too was passed. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apart from these two species, India has also\nproposed to include small-clawed otter, Mako shark, and the Indian Start\nTortoise in Appendix I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The CITES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>CITES is an international convention agreed by\nthe parties to restrict international trade of wild animals and plants that\nthreaten their survival. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was adopted in the year 1973 by 80 countries\nat Washington. Thus, the convention is also known as the Washington Convention.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It came into force in 1975 and it now has 183\nparties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The convention is binding on the parties but it\nwill not supersede the national laws. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It enables the parties to frame domestic legislations to ensure that the convention is implemented effectively in their national
