{"id":2109,"date":"2019-08-20T17:32:49","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T12:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2019-08-20T17:32:51","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T12:02:51","slug":"the-hindu-editorial-analysis-something-special","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/the-hindu-editorial-analysis-something-special\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hindu Editorial Analysis : Something Special"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Bhutan visit.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>PM Modi urged for a greater degree of cooperation between the two\nnations in the areas of Health, Space and Education.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Students from Bhutan were invited for studies in India in various\nsubjects ranging from Buddhism to space.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>India\u2019s commitment to enhance Bhutan\u2019s space technology was\nunderlined by the inauguration of the Ground Earth Station and SATCOM network\n(developed by the assistance of ISRO) by the leaders of both countries.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>PM Modi added that India Bhutan ties should outgrow the\ntraditional hydro power and energy areas and mutual cooperation should be\nachieved in newer areas like digital payments and disaster management.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>PM modi inaugurated Mangdechhu Hydropower project with the energy\ngenerating capacity of 720 MW.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Background of India\nBhutan Relations:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The history of India-Bhutan relations goes back to the colonial\nera. During the British rule, Bhutan was a protectorate of British India (by\nthe treaty of 1910) and its foreign policy and defence were guided by the\nBritish.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Bhutan was the first country to recognize Indian\nIndependence in 1947<\/strong> and the relations between the two were strengthened by the\nAnnexation of Tibet (in 1950) by the Republic of China.<\/li><li>A treaty of cooperation was signed by Indian and Bhutan in 1949\nwhich outlined the bilateral relations between both countries. The treaty of\ncooperation of 1949 provided for the requirement of India\u2019s guidance in\nBhutan\u2019s foreign policy, has been revised by the treaty of 2007. The new treaty\nof 2007, considering the sovereignty of Bhutan replaced this provision.<\/li><li>Relations between Bhutan and India were previously looked after by\nIndia\u2019s Political Officer in Sikkim. In 1968, diplomatic relations between the\ntwo countries were founded by the setting up of a special officer in Bhutan.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contemporary relations\nbetween India and Bhutan:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>India is Bhutan\u2019s largest trade partner with\nover 80 percent of its exports and more than 90 percent of imports every year<\/strong>. <\/li><li>Mechanical appliances, Vehicles, Electrical equipments, Mineral\nProducts and vegetables are major imports by Bhutan from India. <\/li><li>Cement clinkers, dolomite, electricity, portland cement and ferro\nsilicon are the major exports of Bhutan to India.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Water Resources:&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>India and Bhutan have a joint management system called <strong>Joint Group of Experts (JGE)<\/strong> for\nflood management and to assess the causes of frequent floods and issues related\nto soil erosion in the foothills of Himalaya&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On Cultural and Educational Front:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The uniqueness of India-Bhutan relations lies in their traditional\nintimacy of their cultures. A large chunk of Bhutanese students come to India\nfor studies. Many under-graduate and postgraduate scholarships like\nNehru-Wangchuk scholarship and Ambassador\u2019s scholarship are offered to\nBhutanese students studying in India.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Geographical Importance:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Although India and Bhutan share close cultural bonds and strong\ntrade ties, the geographical location of Bhutan servers as the X factor in\ntheir cooperation. Bhutan is located between India and China, the two Asian\ngiants, which makes it a buffer state for them.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Notably, Buffer state is a country which lies between two\nadversary powers. The existence of <strong>a\nBuffer state between two greater superpowers prevents a full grown conflict\nbetween the two counties.<\/strong> Interestingly, buffer states are very prone\nto be occupied by either of the greater powers to exert a geographical pressure\non the other country.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Since India and Bhutan share a special relations and Bhutan being\na Protected State of India, India has considerable influence over Bhutan\u2019s\nforeign affairs. This provides a great deal of geopolitical edge to India over\nChina, our nemesis. Chines annexation of Tibet in1951 and the Doklam stand off\nbetween India and China are the notable examples.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The untapped Hydro Power\nPotential:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bhutan provides a large amount of inexpensive and <strong>clean hydro energy <\/strong>to India and\ngenerates a tremendous export revenue from it in return. India has developed\nthree major hydro power project in Bhutan generating total energy of 1416 MW.\nIn the recent visit PM modi inaugurated Mangdechhu Hydropower project in\nBhutan.<\/li><li>Despite serving cheap electricity to India, Bhutan\u2019s true\nhydropower potential has not yet been explored. Bhutan has been estimated to\ncontain around 30,000 Megawatts (MW) of energy out of which 27,000 MW is\neconomically feasible. The yet explored energy amounts a very tiny fraction of\nthe potential which is 1615 MW.<\/li><li>In 2003-04, anti-India insurgents of the <strong>United Liberation Front of Assam<\/strong> which was based on the\nterritory of Bhutan to attack India were <strong>driven\noff by the Royal Bhutanese Army.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked as an essential\nstep to restore bilateral relations between India and Bhutan. Bhutan\u2019s worry of\ntoo much trade and tourism with India is understandable as it could jeopardise\nthe environment. <\/li><li>Further, new generation of Bhutanese students are not restricted\nto India for their studies. The relations should not be taken for granted, the\nhigh level visits from the U.S and China are alerting signs for India to\nmaintain its strategic relations with Bhutan<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Bhutan visit.
