It is only\nthe third anti-TB drug that got FDA\u2019s approval in more than 40 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The drug Pretomanid will help in fighting multi\ndrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extremely drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was developed by a Non-Profit Organisation\ncalled TB Alliance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The commercial development of the drug has been\nlicensed to Mylan, a\nPennsylvania-based company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pretomanid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The new drug has many promising features. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When used along with <strong>bedaquiline and linezolid<\/strong>, the already\napproved anti-TB drugs, Pretomanid can reduce treatment duration of\ndrug-resistant TB from 18-24 months to just six months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The three-drug regimen achieved a 91% treatment\nsuccess rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has the potential to reduce the number of\ndeaths due to better adherence to treatment. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per WHO, the treatment success rates in\nMDR-TB patients is 54% and XDR-TB patients is 30% with most drugs being\nineffective in people with XDR-TB.\nA combination of eight drugs is needed in a year to treat XDR-TB. Also, these\ndrugs cause side effects like deafness and are toxic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevalence of XDR &amp; MDR-TB<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A TB patient who does not respond to first-line\nof TB drugs isoniazid and rifampicin\nhave MDR-TB. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People who are resistant to the first line of\ndrugs and fluoroquinolone and\nat least one of the three second-line drugs are said to have XDR-TB. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Global Tuberculosis Report 2018 of WHO\nestimates that 4.5 lakh people across the world have MDR-TB and 37,500 people\nhave XDR-TB. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 24% of MDR-TB cases are from India\nand XDR-TB is prevalent in 127 countries. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Will Benefit From Pretomanid?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Pretomanid along with bedaquiline and linezolid is effective at\ntreating adult XDR-TB patients. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the case of MDR-TB, the drug can be used only\nin those who do not respond to normal MDR-TB treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, Pretomanid can be used only for pulmonary TB and not for\nextra-pulmonary TB, drug-sensitive or latent TB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effectiveness Of The Drug Regimen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The drug regimen is known as BPaL &#8211; bedaquiline, pretomanid and linezolid &#8211; were trailed across three\nsites of South Africa. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the trial, 109 people with XDR-TB as well as\nMDR-TB were enrolled. As per TB Alliance, 95 of the first 107 patients were\ntreated with a six-month regimen. The treatment success rate was 90%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many adverse side effects due to the drug regimen.
