More rains now occur in the north-western\nregion of the country than before.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reason as identified by the IIT Bombay\nresearchers is the change in irrigation policy. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers identified this through a\nland-surface model they developed that takes into account the amount of soil\nirrigation and agriculture patterns India. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They came to a conclusion that even a change in\nirrigation policy has the potential to shift monsoon rains and intensify\nextreme rainfall with its feedback to the atmosphere. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Research <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In September, there is maximum\nevapotranspiration from the land as they are heavily irrigated and crops are\nmature. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This contribution of high moisture from the land\nto the atmosphere and leads to rainfall occurrence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The land-surface model that was currently in use\ndid not take into account Indian conditions. These models considered irrigation\nto start at soil moistures at a very low state and ends when it reaches a\nslightly below saturated soil moisture state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IIT Bombay model takes into account Indian\nconditions where there is uncontrolled irrigation. Also, 50% of crop area is\npaddy where fields are submerged in water. The end result is the contribution\nof more water vapour to the atmosphere in India than in the west. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IIT Bombay researchers collaborated with\nPacific Northwest National Laboratory&nbsp;to develop the model taking into\naccount Indian conditions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a result, it is clear that there is a change\nin moisture feedback to atmosphere in areas where there is a change in\nirrigation management. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Northwest India <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The land-surface processes affect the heat\nfluxes &#8211; temperature related and evapotranspiration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The land-use pattern of northwestern India and\nCentral India in September affects these heat fluxes resulting in the\ndistribution of rainfall over the northwest region and intensification of\nextreme rainfalls over Central India. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, the research has not looked into how\nirrigation and agriculture are influencing the monsoon over Southern India. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of soil moisture on rainfall distribution has been identified as a fact by many researchers. The IIT Bombay\u2019s research has clearly shown the shift in the monsoon rainfall and its intensification over parts of India.
