{"id":2045,"date":"2019-08-10T16:01:01","date_gmt":"2019-08-10T10:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2045"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:48:03","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:18:03","slug":"ipcc-report-on-land-use-and-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/ipcc-report-on-land-use-and-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"IPCC Report on Land Use and Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\n(IPCC) of the United Nations (UN) has presented evidence of how land use is\nbeing affected and affects climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Land that is put to use for forestry,\nagriculture, industries, urbanisation, etc., has an impact on the emissions of\ngreenhouse gases. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land-based activities contributed a quarter of\nall greenhouse gas emissions in a year amounting to 12 billion tonnes of CO2\nequivalent. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report particularly noted that the global\nfood system that includes activities like cattle rearing, food processing, food\ntransportation, agriculture, etc., account anywhere between 21 to 37 percent of\nthe overall global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report, after assessing all possible land-use\npatterns has outlined some measures that will not affect the global food\nsystem. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Land Use <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The talk of climate change has always involved\nland use and land-use changes in it as land is both a cause for GHG emissions\nand also acts a carbon sink. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activities like cattle rearing and agriculture\nlead to the release of nitrous oxide and methane into the atmosphere, both\ngreenhouse gases and potent than CO2.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But, the presence of plants, trees, and forests\non land absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land being both the source of emissions and its\nreduction, land-use changes like deforestation, urbanisation and others have\neffects on climate change. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 2007 and 2016 the land sector\ncontributed 5.2 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions annually while it absorbed 11.2\nbillion tonnes. There was a net removal of 6 billion tonnes of CO2 from the\natmosphere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though the discussions on land-use changes\nrelated to climate change are an integral part of climate change negotiations,\nthe report specifically points to the impact of these changes on the global\nfood systems. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food Security Under Threat <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The report notes that the humanities ability to\nfeed itself is under severe pressure due to overexploitation of land and water\nresources <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the report, half a billion people are\nliving in areas that are fast turning into deserts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The soil loss is 10-100 times faster than it is\nforming in these areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These threats are being exacerbated by climate\nchange in the form of droughts, floods, storms and other weather extremes.\nThese will disrupt the global food supply over time. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 10% of the population is already\nundernourished and food shortages will lead to an increase in cross-border\nmigration. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the experts, the food crisis might\noccur in several continents at once. Already the potential for\nmulti-breadbasket failure is increasing. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The food crisis will affect the poorer countries\nmore than the richer countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measures of Hope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The report has offered some measures of hope to\naddress the looming crisis. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The measures include a major reevaluation of\nland use including agricultural practices. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing land productivity, wasting less food,\nchanging dietary habits of people from cattle meat to other types of meat. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report notes that, if proper changes to the\nland use pattern in agriculture and animal is implemented, 2.3 to 9 billion\ntonnes of CO2 equivalent can be avoided by 2050. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also with changes to the people\u2019s dietary habits\nCO2 equivalent of 8 billion tonnes can be avoided by 2050. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IPCC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Geneva-based IPCC is mandated by the UN to\nassess science related to climate change. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generally, the IPCC reviews already published science\nreports on climate change that are in the public domain. But, this is the first\ntime it has concentrated solely on the land sector. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new report is part of a series of reports it\nis reviewing in the run-up to sixth Assessment Report (AR6) in 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report is prepared by 100 experts from 52\ncountries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The resources exploitation in India is severe and the country is\nfacing food security issues. Also, many reports have already shown that the\ncountry will be the most affected by climate change. Though cattle meat\nconsumption in India is less, the population of cattle in the country is\nhighest in the world which has a direct effect on land use pattern. Overgrazing\nis leading to desertification in most parts of the country. Also, the country\nis home to the most number of malnourished people in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediate steps are thus needed to have a safe supply of food to\nall in the country. Degraded and deforested land needs to be restored. The\ngovernment has already committed itself to create a carbon sink of about 2.5 to\n3 billion tonnes by 2032.
