{"id":2009,"date":"2019-08-03T14:56:52","date_gmt":"2019-08-03T09:26:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=2009"},"modified":"2024-06-06T17:01:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:31:35","slug":"us-pulls-out-of-inf-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/us-pulls-out-of-inf-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"US Pulls Out of INF Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States has pulled out of the Cold War-era\nIntermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty&nbsp;with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The INF Treaty <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The treaty was signed between the USA and Soviet\nUnion (later Russia) in 1987 that banned all land-based ballistic and cruise\nmissiles with nuclear capability with a short range of 500-1000 km and an\nintermediate-range of 1000-5,500 km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 2500 missiles were eliminated by 1991. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">American Withdrawal <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It was President of the United States Mr. Donald\nTrump who announced in October 2018 that the US would withdraw from the treaty\ndue to noncompliance by Russia. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In February 2019, the treaty was suspended and\non 2nd August 2019, the US withdrew from the treaty. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the end of the treaty, the race for arms\nhas now begun between the two superpowers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Already, the United States and Russia are\nplanning to test many new intermediate-range missiles though they are unlikely\nto be deployed against each other. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Russia The Real Target? <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Many experts believe that the unilateral\nwithdrawal of the US from the treaty is not entirely due to Russia but due to\nthe growing threat from China to the US, which has already amassed many short\nto intermediate range missiles. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China has placed missiles in southeast China\nthat can target Taiwan, and in islands closer to Japan and India. Some missiles\nof China can also target Guam, a region controlled by the USA in the Pacific.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For these reasons, America believes China as its\nlong-term strategic rival. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, questions were being raised of the timing\nof the withdrawal as a nuclear confrontation with North Korea and Iran is\nbecoming possible by the day. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This has prompted worries in Europe and Asia. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NATO Blames Russia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>NATO calls put Russia for the US\u2019s withdrawals.\nIt calls pout Russia for not taking its international obligations seriously and\nnot complying to it. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It further points to the threat posed to the\nAllied Security due to Russia\u2019s 9M729 missile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9M729<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Novator 9M729 or SSC-8 is a ground-launched\ncruise missile which Russia flight-tested in November 2018. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The missile was labeled as a \u201cmissile of\nconcern\u201d by the American administration. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is this missile that led to the fall out of\nthe INF treaty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India\u2019s Intermediate-Range Missiles <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>India possesses and deploys intermediate-range\nnuclear missiles like Agni III, Agni IV, and Prithvi. So far, there is no\nrestriction on production and deployment of these missiles by India as the\ncountry is not a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is actively expanding its arsenal as it is\nrequired to counter the threats posed by Pakistan and China, both\nnuclear-capable countries. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>INF treaty was the major confidence-building measure for the world that the superpowers will not use their nuclear weapons at their whims and cause destruction to the world. But, with the withdrawal of the US from the treaty and possible violations by Russia, the world will witness a new arms race as it was during the Cold War days.
