{"id":1989,"date":"2019-07-30T13:19:40","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T07:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1989"},"modified":"2024-06-06T15:16:08","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:46:08","slug":"deep-ocean-mission-will-commence-in-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/deep-ocean-mission-will-commence-in-october\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep Ocean Mission Will Commence in October"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An ambitious project to research the deepest parts of the oceans,\nthe Deep Ocean Mission, is set to commence in October this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Ministry of Earth Sciences has stated that\nthe Rs. 8000 crore Deep Ocean Mission will commence from October. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government has given its in-principle\napproval to the mission and the expenditure plans have been submitted to\nvarious departments of the Ministry. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mission <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the ambitious missions that the\nPrime Minister\u2019s Scientific Advisory Board has recommended. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The objective of the Mission is to explore the\ndeep ocean just like ISRO exploring the space. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will specifically help in discovering\nreserves of polymetallic nodules (PMN) in the 75,000 sq. km. the area allotted\nin the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) by UN International Seabed Authority. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PMN <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>These are rocks on the ocean floor and are rich\nin manganese, nickel, iron, and cobalt. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per estimates, exploiting even 10% of these\nnodules will meet the energy requirements for 100 years. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Central Indian Ocean alone an estimated\n380 million tonnes of PMNs are available.&nbsp;\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Exclusive Economic Zone of India is spread\nover 2.2 million sq kilometres and the deep ocean lies unexplored. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new mission is expected to bring insights on\nthis unexplored area. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International Seabed Authority <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>ISB is an intergovernmental organisation\nestablished by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was formed in 1994. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Authority provides seabed exploration\ncontracts to explore PNMs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each exploration area is limited to 150,000 sq.\nkilometres and after eight years, half of the area is to be relinquished to the\nauthority. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each entity that has a contract must report to\nthe Authority of its activities every year. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mission will be the most challenging mission for the country as it involves the development of advanced machines like a submersible that can carry three people to depths of 6000m in the ocean. It also carries many scientific instruments along with it to carry out research.
