{"id":1975,"date":"2019-07-25T15:09:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T09:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:42:14","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T11:12:14","slug":"indian-scientists-find-a-novel-way-to-kill-superbugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/indian-scientists-find-a-novel-way-to-kill-superbugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Scientists Find A Novel Way To Kill Superbugs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur along with\nCentral Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow a laboratory of Council for\nScientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have found a new way to kill\nsuperbugs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Superbugs are increasingly becoming resistant to\nmost known antibiotics and are causing a global health scare. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, Indian scientists have found a way to\ndestroy these superbugs using the same antibiotics to which they have developed\nresistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Study <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists used S<em>taphylococcus aureus<\/em>for the study. It\nisa bacteria found commonly in the nostrils, on the skin and in the upper\ntracts of the respiratory system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These bugs do not affect a healthy person but in\nthose with low immunity levels, they are lethal. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This bacteria has developed resistance to many\ndrugs that are commonly used in the clinics.&nbsp;\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is estimated that these drug-resistant bugs\ncould kill 10 million people by 2050. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The scientists have developed a novel molecular\nframework for drugs to latch on to these germs and prevent them from\nmultiplying. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The novelty of the molecule lies in its\nstructural design. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Function <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>When energy production in a bacteria is stopped\nfor 20 minutes, it cannot divide and multiply. The molecule so designed does\nexactly that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For bacteria to survive and replicate, a\nsubstance called gyrase is essential. In most organisms, there will be two\ntypes of gyrases &#8211; gyrase A and gyrase B. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All antibiotic drugs target gyrase A, but\nsuperbugs modifiers gyrase A and makes it difficult for the drugs to bind to\nthe substance. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new molecule developed by the scientists\ntargets gyrase B which is conserved and difficult to mutate. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The molecules when used in combination with fluoroquinolone drugs, both gyrase\nA and gyrase B are attacked making the molecule more effective. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluoroquinolone drugs are the first line of\nantibiotics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proof-of-Concept <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists say that the molecule is still in the\nproof-of-concept stage and its effectiveness is high on lab-grown bacterial\ncells. They have also found that the bacteria are finding it difficult to\ndevelop resistance against the new molecule. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a promising development when the world is in dire need of new interventions and alternative mechanisms to counter the threat of superbugs. Scientists are hopeful that the new molecule, in the future, will help in treating<em> S.
