{"id":1966,"date":"2019-07-22T14:53:04","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T09:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1966"},"modified":"2024-06-06T14:56:13","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:26:13","slug":"antibiotic-colistin-banned-as-animal-feed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/antibiotic-colistin-banned-as-animal-feed\/","title":{"rendered":"Antibiotic Colistin Banned As Animal Feed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union Health Ministry has banned the use of Colistin in the\nanimal food industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has\npassed orders prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, sale, and usage of\ncolistin and its formulations for food-producing animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colistin is a last-resort antibiotic that is\nbeing used rampantly in aqua, poultry, and other animal-based food industries. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This unchecked usage of the antibiotic has lead\nto rising in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in humans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The antibiotic is used as a growth supplement in\nthe food industry. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the ban, AMR will be reduced in the\ncountry. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Orders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The order came a month after the Drugs Technical\nAdvisory Board (DTAB), the apex drug advisory body to the government, called\nfor banning the drug in animal feed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the orders of the Ministry, labels should\nbe affixed on the Colistin container used for human use stating that it is not\nto be used as feed for animals, poultry or in aquaculture.&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Research <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In 2018, researchers from Apollo Cancer Hospital\nand Christian Medical College, Vellore have found colistin-resistant bacteria\nin samples of raw food collected across Chennai. This raised an alarm in the\nmedical fraternity. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As colistin is a last-resort antibiotic,\nbacteria becoming resistant to it will lead to more prolonged illness. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheering The Order <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Across the country, the medical fraternity is\nwelcoming the move as it will drastically reduce AMR in the country. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usage of any drug in excess will lead to the\ndevelopment of resistance to the drug by the bacteria. Thus usage of colistin\nas a growth enhancer in the animals will lead to its usage only in therapy and\nAMR development will be reduced. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shortage of New Antibiotics <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The world is in a desperate search for new antibiotics to thwart\nthe threat of AMR. But the results are not coming soon. We have to wait for\nsome more time before new antibiotics are available at commercial scale. Till\nthat time, measures such as this (banning) will help reduce the development of\nantimicrobial resistant bacteria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMR is threatening the world health security that humanity has built painstakingly over the centuries. Definite measures such as this have to be taken for the common good of the people across the world.
