{"id":1928,"date":"2019-07-12T14:34:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T09:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1928"},"modified":"2024-06-06T15:26:18","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:56:18","slug":"facial-recognition-system-to-track-criminals-proposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/facial-recognition-system-to-track-criminals-proposed\/","title":{"rendered":"Facial Recognition System to Track Criminals Proposed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has proposed to roll out <strong>Automated Facial Recognition System (<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/automated-facial-recognition-what-ncrb-proposes-what-are-the-concerns-5823110\/\">AFRS<\/a>)<\/strong> to track criminals, missing people and unidentified bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>NCRB has recently invited bids for AFRS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a component of the Crime and Criminal\nTracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) being implemented by the NCRB. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CCTNS is a database of criminals and crimes and\nit has linkages with over 15000 police stations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The AFRS will add another dimension to the\ninvestigations which were predominantly based on fingerprint matching to track\ncriminals. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now digital photos or video footages will aid in\nthe investigation that too at a quick pace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So far, matching of photographs is done manually\nand it is time consuming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Privacy Concern <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Many questions are being raised on the privacy\nof the people tracked by AFRS. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The officials say that the system will track\nonly criminals, missing people, children and unidentified bodies. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In CCTNS database there are 7.71 lakh cases of\nmissing persons including 98,000 children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The data gathered from AFRS will be used only by\nthe authorised law enforcement agencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will capture images from CCTV feed and match\nit with a blacklisted image and generate alerts. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using the tool, the police can identify a\nmissing child with the image of the child in the database. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per officials, the tool will help identify\nmany missing persons and reunite them with their families. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, if a person is arrested for a crime, his image\ncan be scanned on the CCTNS for past crime records making it difficult for such\ncriminals to create false identities. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the intended use of AFRS is benign in nature, there is a\npossible misuse of the tool for personal gains by people within the system.\nStringent rules in accessing the database is a must. Also, appropriate\nmonitoring of the database is needed. NCRB should also look into cyberattacks\nthat might happen to steal the data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tools like AFRS are good to thwart crimes, but it raises the question of country becoming a surveillance
