{"id":1895,"date":"2019-07-04T17:45:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T12:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1895"},"modified":"2024-06-06T15:37:50","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T10:07:50","slug":"global-warming-to-impact-indian-jobs-ilo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/global-warming-to-impact-indian-jobs-ilo\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Warming to Impact Indian Jobs: International Labour Organisation (ILO)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>International Labour Organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/newdelhi\/aboutus\/WCMS_166809\/lang--en\/index.htm\">(ILO)<\/a><\/strong> released a report that showed how jobs in India are going to be impacted adversely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the report, <strong>&#8216;Working on a warmer\nplanet: The impact of heat stress on labour productivity and decent work\u2019<\/strong>,\n34 million jobs will be lost by the year 2030 due to heat associated with\nglobal warming. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It projects that the global loss in jobs would\nbe 80-million making India the worst affected country. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heat Stress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>As per the report, heat stress is the heat that\nis in excess of what the body can tolerate but do not cause any bodily\nimpairment. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generally, temperatures in excess of 35-degrees\nand high humidity conditions cause heat stress. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During work, this excess heat causes an\noccupational health risk and impairs a worker\u2019s capacity to work to his full\ncapacity and restricts normal physical functions and capabilities. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The projections in the report are based on a\nglobal temperature rise of 1.5 degrees centigrade by the end of the century and\nlabour force trends. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on this, the report projects that 2.2\npercent of total working hours will be lost worldwide in 2030. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This amounts to an economic loss of $2,400\nbillion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indian Scenario <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>South Asia will lose the most working hours at\n5% in 2030 leading to a loss of 43 million jobs in the region. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of this, 34 million will be from India alone. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has lost 4.3% of work hours in 1995, which\nis projected to increase to 5.8% in 2030. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The impact is majorly on the agriculture and\nconstruction sectors. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both the agriculture and construction sectors\nwill lose 9.04% working hours each. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The projected losses for the manufacturing\nsector is 5.29% and services sector will lose the least at 1.48%. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experts Talk <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Though agriculture and construction sectors are\nprojected to have similar losses, it is the construction sector that will face\nmore losses. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experts say that there are two reasons for this.\nFirst is the impact of heat in the agriculture sector on labours and the water\ndepletion that is causing many to migrate to cities for work and they are\nending up as construction labourers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per ILO, 940 million people work in the\nagriculture sector which will account for 60% of working hour losses by 2030\ndue to heat stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The construction sector will lose 19% worldwide.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experts also say that heat stress will further\nlead to high inequality within the societies and between low-income and\nhigh-income countries. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report shows that the economic impact of global warming on India is huge. The burden is especially high on the lower income segment.
