{"id":1852,"date":"2019-06-21T14:46:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T09:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1852"},"modified":"2024-06-06T16:22:47","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T10:52:47","slug":"himalayan-glaciers-melting-away-at-a-rapid-pace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/himalayan-glaciers-melting-away-at-a-rapid-pace\/","title":{"rendered":"Himalayan Glaciers: Melting Away At A Rapid Pace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A scientific study using the cold war-era spy satellite images has found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_glaciers_of_India\">Himalayan glaciers<\/a> have lost a quarter of its ice since 1975.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The study conducted using the spy satellite\nimages captured during the cold war and compared them with the images from the\nmodern stereo satellites. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was found that the glacial melting on the\nHimalayas is occurring twice as fast as average temperatures rose after the\nbeginning of the century.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the height of the cold war, the US had\ndeployed several spy satellites for reconnaissance purpose that orbited the\nearth and captured numerous images using telescopic camera system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using the images from these satellites\nscientists are now showing the devastating effects of global warming on the\nHimalayas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientists have used the overlapping images of\nan area of 30,000 sq meters with a resolution of 6 to 9 meters and have\ndeveloped a digital elevation model of the Himalayas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four decades of ice loss in 650 largest glaciers\nacross a transect of 2000 km on the Himalayas has been studied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Observations <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Of the toll ice mass measured in 1975, 87%\nremained in 2000 and 72% remained in 2016. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similar ice loss rates have been found across\nsubregions and doubling of the average ice loss rates during 2000-2016 relative\nto 1975-2000 interval. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study asserts that rising temperature is the\nreason for the increased ice loss rates while categorically ruling out the deposition\nof soot and changing precipitation patterns for ice loss. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The numbers are consistent with the multi-decade\nweather station records of the High Mountain Asia (HMA &#8211; which includes all\nmountain ranges surrounding the Tibetan Plateau). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of Himalayan Glaciers <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Millions of people in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are\ndependent on the waters from the rivers that have their source in the Himalayan\nglaciers. With the accelerated ice loss, floods may occur. People, crops, and\nlivestock will be under threat. There will come a time when these rivers will\nhave less water and drought conditions will prevail in the once productive\nregion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Himalayan glaciers are fed by the monsoon precipitation. It\nwas thought that the varying monsoonal patterns are the reason for glacier\nloss. But the study clearly shows that it is the rising temperatures due to\nglobal warming the reason behind melting glaciers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way the Indian government can tackle the issues is to take the leadership position at the world stage and follow the Paris Climate Agreement targets diligently and make other countries to do the same. Only then there is a chance that climate change, the great crisis the humanity is facing may abate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In
