{"id":1783,"date":"2019-06-11T16:37:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T11:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1783"},"modified":"2019-06-11T16:39:52","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T11:09:52","slug":"chandrayaan-2-all-set-for-a-july-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/chandrayaan-2-all-set-for-a-july-date\/","title":{"rendered":"Chandrayaan-2 All Set For A July Date"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)\nhas set a mid-July date for the launch of much awaited Chandrayaan-2 space\nmission. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/chandrayaan-2-nearly-ready-for-july-launch\/articleshow\/69724508.cms\">Chandrayaan-2 <\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>This is the second mission from ISRO to send a\nspacecraft to the Moon. <\/li><li>The mission also involves a lander and a rover\nmission.<\/li><li>ISRO has set July 9 to 16 as the window for\nlaunching the mission. <\/li><li>September 6 is the date for a soft-landing on\nthe moon. <\/li><li>ISRO has chosen the southern pole of the moon\nfor its lander. This region has not been explored by any space agency so far. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Payloads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The mission involves an orbiter, a lander and a\nrover. <\/li><li>The orbiter has eight science instruments:<ul><li>Terrain\nMapping Camera 2 (TMC-2): It provides a detailed 3D map.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Collimated\nLarge Array Soft X-Ray Spectrometer (CLASS): Maps abundance of major rock\nforming elements<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Solar\nX-Ray Monitor (XSM): observes X-rays emitted from sun &amp; supports CLASS<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Orbiter\nHigh Resolution Camera (OHRC): Provides high-resolution images of the landing\nsite<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Imaging\nInfrared Spectrometer (IIRS): Identifies minerals and signatures of hydroxyl\nand water molecules <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Synthetic\nAperture Radar (SAR): Maps lunar craters and other features especially in polar\nregions<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Chandra\u2019s\nAtmospheric Composition Explorer (CHACE-2): Will carry out a detailed study of\nthe lunar exosphere <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Radio\nAnatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere (RAMBHA):\nMeasures Total Electron Content (TEC)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The Lander has three science instruments:<ul><li>RAMBHA\n(Langmuir probe): Measures TEC of the lunar ionosphere and its morphology.\nMeasures surface plasma density &amp; changes. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Chandra\u2019s\nSurface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE): Measures thermal properties of\nregolith and polar region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Instrument\nfor Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA): Measures seismicity of landing site and\nstructure of crust and mantle<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The Rover contains:<ul><li>Laser-induced\nBreakdown Spectrometer (LIBS): Derives chemical composition and infers\nmineralogical composition on the surface<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Alpha\nparticle X-Ray Spectrometer\n(APXS): Determines the elemental composition of rocks and soil.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Apart from these, a passive payload &#8211;\nRetroreflector &#8211; from NASA is also a part of the mission. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenges <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per ISRO, the following are the seven\nchallenges of landing a probe on the moon:<ul><li><strong>Maintaining\nan accurate trajectory to the moon &#8211;<\/strong> the trajectory distance to the moon is\n3.844 lakh kilometres. Maintaining the trajectory is dependent on the gravity\nof the moon which varies in different parts of the moon. Also, there will be\nthe influence of the sun and other astronomical bodies on the spacecraft. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Deep-Space\nCommunication &#8211; <\/strong>there will be a communication delay between the probe and\nthe ground station. This is due to the distance and limited on-board power of\nthe transmitter. A message sent will be received after a few minutes. Also, due\nto the background noise, the signal becomes weals which must be picked by\npowerful antennas. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Trans\nLunar Injection and Lunar Capture Mission &#8211;<\/strong> In this mission, a series of\nengine burns will take place to get closer to the Moon whose location keeps\nchanging. The scientists must predict the intersection of the spacecraft and\nthe moon\u2019s path in advance and the margin of error is narrow. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Orbiting\nAround Moon &#8211; <\/strong>The lunar gravity varies due to the uneven distribution of\nmass and the spacecraft\u2019s orbit gets influenced. Also, exact knowledge of\ntemperature 100km from the moon is necessary. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Soft\nLanding on Moon &#8211;<\/strong> ISRO stated that soft landing on the moon is the most challenging\npart of the Chandrayaan-2 mission. The lander named <strong>Vikram <\/strong>must be\ndescended on the moon by adjusting to the local gravity variation. While\ndescending, all systems and units must work in unison. And the lander has to\ntouch down on the rugged terrain gently without any damage or falling into\ncommunication shadow area. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Lunar\nDust &#8211;<\/strong> the Lunar Dust is very fine, hard and negatively charges. While\nfiring on-board engines, the dust might flow back and stick to the probe\nleading to disruption in deployment mechanism or functioning of the solar\npanels. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Extreme\nTemperatures and Vacuum &#8211;<\/strong> A lunar day or night lasts for 14 Earth days.\nThis causes extreme temperature variations.
