{"id":1770,"date":"2019-06-10T15:22:55","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T09:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1770"},"modified":"2019-06-26T16:04:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T10:34:29","slug":"a-new-test-kit-for-malaria-detection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/a-new-test-kit-for-malaria-detection\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Test Kit For Malaria Detection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Scientists from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iitg.ac.in\/\">IIT Guwahati<\/a> have developed a new test kit that makes detecting malaria easy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Malaria is a continuing burden on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"India (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/tag\/india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>India<\/strong><\/a>. <\/li><li>Over a million cases were reported in the year 2017.<\/li><li>Detecting the disease early will help save millions of lives. <\/li><li>Making such detection easy, scientists from IIT Guwahati have developed a paper-based malaria test kit and detection method which is <strong>Simple, Fast and Reusable<\/strong>. <\/li><li>Using the kit, <strong>Plasmodium Falciparum<\/strong>, the malaria-causing parasite can be detected. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Instruments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Scientists were able to detect the antigen\nreleased in the bloodstream by the malaria parasite using a simple syringe\nfitted with magnetic beads and some chemicals. <\/li><li>The <strong>magnetic bead-tethered aptamers<\/strong> (two\ndifferent DNA molecules) captures only the specific antigen of the parasite,\nseparates these from the blood serum to perform the reaction. <\/li><li>As per the scientists, the detection kit will be\ncheaper when mass produced and works efficiently even in hot and humid\nconditions. <\/li><li>One aptamer captures the antigen P. falciparum&nbsp;glutamate dehydrogenase &#8211; PfGDH of\nP.Falciparum strain and the other aptamer captures Plasmodium&nbsp;lactate dehydrogenase &#8211;\nPLDH&nbsp;which is common among Plasmodium species.<\/li><li>These captured antigens when comes in contact\nwith the chemical substrate in the syringe, turns the blue dye into pink. <\/li><li>This dye is then adsorbed over a chromatographic\npaper.<\/li><li>Pink colour on the paper is a direct indication\nof the presence of P.Falciparum in the blood serum. <\/li><li>The colour intensity increases according to the\nconcentration of the parasite\u2019s antigen in the blood serum.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Patent Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The scientist team has already applied for the patent for one aptamer and the detection strategy. <\/li><li>In the next phase, scientists will field trial the kit for point of care applications. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Also, read: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/debt-resolution-norms-eased\/\"><em><strong>Debt Resolution Norms Eased<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/unicef-study-on-swachh-bharat-abhiyan\/\"><em><strong>UNICEF Study On Swachh Bharat Abhiyan<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/kerala-again-under-the-grip-of-nipah-virus\/\"><em><strong>Kerala Again Under The Grip of Nipah Virus<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Quick detection of the parasite in the blood will enable healthcare professionals to act quickly to cure the patient of malaria. <\/li><li>The development of a detection kit indigenously will be cost-effective and will help the government achieve its target of eliminating malaria from the country by 2030. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-dark-gray-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>We are going to start New Batch <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/subjectoffered.php\">GS Foundation Course<\/a><\/em> on 19 June 2019. also, read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/daily-current-affairs.php\">daily current affairs<\/a> here.
