{"id":1735,"date":"2019-06-04T13:56:51","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T08:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1735"},"modified":"2019-06-04T13:56:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T08:26:54","slug":"indias-gender-inequality-came-to-the-fore-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/indias-gender-inequality-came-to-the-fore-again\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Gender Inequality Came To The Fore Again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>India was ranked 95th among 129 countries by the <strong>SDG Gender\nIndex<\/strong> that measures global gender equality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-Detail <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>SDG Gender Index is the <strong>newest index to\nmeasure global gender equality<\/strong>. <\/li><li>It is developed by <strong>Equal Measure 2030<\/strong>, a\njoint effort of organizations like African Women\u2019s development and\nCommunication Network, Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women,\nBill and Melinda Gates Foundation, International Women\u2019s Health Coalition, and <strong>Jan\nSwasthya Abhiyaan.<\/strong><\/li><li>The new index comes right after the <strong>World\nEconomic Forum\u2019s Gender Gap Index<\/strong> which ranked India as 108th. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Index <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The index <strong>takes into account 14 of the 17\nSustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong> that include aspects like poverty,\nhunger, health, education, political representation, equality at the workplace,\netc. <\/li><li>In the index, a score of 100 reflects the\nachievement of gender equality in relation to the targets set against various\nindicators. <\/li><li>For example, 100% achievement in the target of\ngirls going to secondary education means the country will receive a score of\n100 for this indicator. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">World Scenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As per the index, the world is far from achieving gender equality. <\/li><li>1.4 billion girls and women are living in countries that get a <strong>\u2018Very Poor\u2019 grade (score 59 and below). <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>The 129<\/strong> countries measure for gender equality represents 95% of the world female population. Of this 65.7 out of 100 girls live in countries with <strong>\u2018Poor\u2019 grade (score 60-69)<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In total, 2.5 billion girls and women live in very poor and poor grade countries. <\/li><li>As per the index, just 8% of the world female population live in countries with <strong>\u2018good\u2019 (score 80-89)<\/strong> gender equality grade. <\/li><li>No country has achieved an <strong>excellent grade with a score of above 90<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Jan Swasthya Abhiyaan states that not all countries\u2019 score on the index correlates with the national income. <\/li><li>But, some countries perform better-based oil GDP per capita and India is one such country that performs better on GDP per capita. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India Scenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In the index, India scored high goal scores in health &#8211; 79.9. <\/li><li>In hunger &amp; nutrition, it got a score of 76.2.<\/li><li>The country got 71.8 in energy. <\/li><li>The lowest score for the country is in partnerships &#8211; 18.3. <\/li><li>It got 38.1 in industry, infrastructure, and innovation.<\/li><li>In climate, it got 43.4. <\/li><li>On indicators that define the goals, India scored high on the percentage of female students enrolled in primary education who are over age &#8211; 95.3.<\/li><li>The lowest score on indicators includes the proportion of seats held by women in national Parliament &#8211; 23.6. Only 11.8% is the share of women in the national parliament in 2018. <\/li><li>The score on seats held by women in Supreme Court &#8211; 18.2 and the share of women is 4%. <\/li><li><strong>On gender-based violence<\/strong> &#8211; <ul><li>The proportion of women aged 20-24 years who were married or in a union before age 18 &#8211; 27.3%.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Women who agreed that a husband\/partner is justified in beating his wife\/partner under certain circumstances &#8211; 47%. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Women aged 15+ who reported that they feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where she lives is &#8211; 69.1%. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\"><strong>Also, Read: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/election-commission-recommendations-still-await-approval\/\">Election Commission Recommendations Still Await Approval<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/scientists-declare-the-current-epoch-as-anthropocene\/\">Scientists Declare the Current Epoch As \u2018Anthropocene\u2019<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/plans-submitted-as-part-of-national-clean-air-programme\/\">Plans Submitted As Part of National Clean Air Programme<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The societal and economic costs of gender inequality are huge for a country like India.<\/li><li>Inequality breeds violence against women especially in a patriarchal society like India. <\/li><li>The index thus acts as a guidepost for the policymakers to bring in necessary measures that will promote gender equality in the country. <\/li><li>In the index, India\u2019s lagging behind in key indicators like the representation of women in the national parliament and the Supreme Court is a cause for concern. <\/li><li>In this high profile and highly visible segments, more representation by the women will lead to more women aspiring for bigger things and demand gender equality. <\/li><li>A concerted effort from both the policymakers and the general public is thus crucial for achieving gender equality in a country like India.  <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>India was ranked 95th among 129 countries by the SDG Gender Index that measures global gender equality.
