{"id":1664,"date":"2019-05-21T13:39:27","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T08:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1664"},"modified":"2019-05-21T13:39:27","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T08:09:27","slug":"kilogram-gets-a-makeover-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/kilogram-gets-a-makeover-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Kilogram Gets A Makeover &#8211; India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/tag\/india\/\">India<\/a> has adopted a global resolution to update the International Systems of Units (SI) that redefines the basic unit &#8211; Kilogram.<\/p>\n<h3>In-Detail<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>With the adoption of the resolution, the textbook definition of the kilogram is set to get a makeover.<\/li>\n<li>So far, the measure of a kilogram is derived from the weight of a block of platinum-iridium alloy present in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (IBWM), France.<\/li>\n<li>A reference block is housed at CSIR-<strong>National Physical Laboratory<\/strong> (NPL), New Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>The resolution now puts an end to the measure basic units using physical objects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Kilogram will now be defined based on the Planck Constant. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Planck Constant: <\/strong>It is a constant of nature that relates to how mater releases energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Kibble Balance:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>NPL is the official keeper of units of measurement.<\/li>\n<li>After the adoption of the resolution, it has recommended updating the definition of kilogram in all school textbooks, engineering textbooks, and course curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>The institute is also looking to develop its own \u2018Kibble Balance\u2019, a device that measures Planck Constant.<\/li>\n<li>As per NPL, the cost of developing the device is Rs. 50 crore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Does It Mean Replacing The Common Weight?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The change in definition doesn\u2019t mean that existing Kg weights are thrown out.<\/li>\n<li>Everyday calibration whether for retail weighing or high-precision weighing, it will be the same as before.<\/li>\n<li>But, in the decades to come, with advancements in science and technology, the new units are set to play an important role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Quantum World:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The resolution was passed in November 2018 at the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (IBWM).<\/li>\n<li>The resolution was adopted by over 100 countries.<\/li>\n<li>It also includes change of reference to units like &#8211; Kelvin, Mole and Ampere.<\/li>\n<li>All the seven basic units &#8211; Kilogram, Kelvin, Mole, Ampere, Second, Metre, and Candela &#8211; are now linked to fundamental constants or quantum constants that are invariants of time and space.<\/li>\n<li>This has opened up a new era for the quantum world which humanity is slowly coming to grasp of.<\/li>\n<li>The numerous possibilities in the quantum world need universal standard units that are not dependent on artifacts (that can degrade over time).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommend Current Affairs<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/india-and-data-localisation-current-scenario\/\">India and Data Localisation \u2013 Current Scenario<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/ec-invokes-article-324-to-curtail-bengal-campaigning\/\">EC Invokes Article 324 To Curtail Bengal Campaigning<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Units And Calculation:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Metre <\/strong>&#8211; Calculated based on the speed of light<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kilogram <\/strong>&#8211; Calculated from Planck Constant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second<\/strong> &#8211; Calculated based on radiation of caesium-33 atom<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ampere<\/strong> &#8211; calculated based on electron\u2019s charge<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kelvin<\/strong> &#8211; Calculated based on boatsman constant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mole<\/strong> &#8211; Calculated based on Avogardro Constant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Candela<\/strong> &#8211; From efficacy of light of specific frequency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>India has adopted a global resolution to update the International Systems of Units (SI) that redefines the basic unit &#8211; Kilogram.
