{"id":1615,"date":"2019-05-09T16:00:38","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T10:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1615"},"modified":"2024-06-07T16:46:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T11:16:29","slug":"target-2023-to-eliminate-trans-fats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/target-2023-to-eliminate-trans-fats\/","title":{"rendered":"Target 2023 to Eliminate Trans Fats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In News<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the <strong>International Food and Beverage Alliance<\/strong> (IFBA), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/tag\/who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World Health Organisation<\/strong><\/a> (WHO) set 2023 as the target year to eliminate trans fats from the industrially produced food supply.<\/p>\n<h3>In-Detail:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trans fat is the worst form of fat that is known to be a cause for several heart ailments.<\/li>\n<li>They are directly related to over 500,000 deaths a year across the world.<\/li>\n<li>WHO has said that eliminating trans fats is the easiest and simplest ways to save lives.<\/li>\n<li>IFBA members pledged to limit the quantity of trans fats to 2gm per 100gm fat\/oil globally by 2023.<\/li>\n<li>In the meeting held by WHO Director and 12 major food and beverages companies of the world, also discussed the amounts of salt and sugar in foods and saturated fats.<\/li>\n<li>Also came to the discussion was the value of regulatory action on labeling and marketing.<\/li>\n<li>WHO urged the members to strictly adhere to regulatory guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Trans Fats:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>These are unsaturated fatty acids found marginally in nature by are produced from vegetable oils extensively.<\/li>\n<li>These fats are formed through the process of hydrogenation where hydrogen is added to liquid vegetable oils to make them solid.<\/li>\n<li>The process is inexpensive, creates a longer shelf-life and thus is an advantage for the food industry.<\/li>\n<li>Trans fats are also produced when heating oil repeatedly at 180-degree centigrade.<\/li>\n<li>But, these fats pose a major health risk.<\/li>\n<li>They are known to cause coronary artery disease.<\/li>\n<li>Trans fats increase the amount of <strong>Low-Density Lipoprotein<\/strong> (LDL) in the body and also significantly decreases <strong>High-Density Lipoprotein<\/strong> (HDL) that is beneficial to the heart.<\/li>\n<li>The fats are also known to cause diabetes, cancer, obesity, liver dysfunction, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>India and Trans Fats:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/tag\/india\/\">India<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong>Food Safety and Standards Authority of India<\/strong> (FSSAI) has brought out guidelines in 2015 to restrict trans fats to 5% in industrially produced food.<\/li>\n<li>In November 2018, FSSAI launched a mass media campaign creating awareness on trans fats and eliminating them by 2022 in the country.<\/li>\n<li>The campaign is titled \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Heart Attack Rewind<\/strong><\/span>\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Various states in India have also launched campaigns to rein in trans fats.
