{"id":1582,"date":"2019-05-03T11:32:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T06:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1582"},"modified":"2024-06-07T17:56:24","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T12:26:24","slug":"naming-a-cyclone-fani-how-is-it-done","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/naming-a-cyclone-fani-how-is-it-done\/","title":{"rendered":"Naming of Cyclone  &#8211; How Is It Done?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cyclone \u2018<strong>Fani<\/strong>\u2019 which has started its journey from South-East Bay of Bengal has finally made a landfall in Odisha after more than 10 days at sea.<\/p>\n<h3>How Fani Got Its Name?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Historically, the names of certain cyclones get registered in the memory of people because of their destructiveness and the vast media coverage.<\/li>\n<li>The <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>HudHud cyclone in 2014<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Ockhi in 2017<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Titli<\/strong> <\/span>and <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Gaja in 2018<\/strong><\/span> are some examples.<\/li>\n<li>In general, tropical cyclones were not named. The naming began with the Hurricanes in the Atlantic with the US adopting a naming system.<\/li>\n<li>The naming system for tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean began in 2004.<\/li>\n<li>Eight countries of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea region agreed upon a rotating naming system for cyclones occurring in these seas.<\/li>\n<li>The eight countries are&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Oman, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand<\/span>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All these are members of the group <em>WMO\/ESCAP<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The countries submitted their names which are arranged in an 8&#215;8 table.<\/li>\n<li>Each country is allocated a row and eight names are arranged and a total of 64 names will be present in the table.<\/li>\n<li>The naming of the cyclone goes column-wise.<\/li>\n<li>The name \u2018<strong>Fani<\/strong>\u2019 was proposed by Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li>The next name will be named \u2018Vayu\u2019 which is proposed by India.<\/li>\n<li>Once the names in the list are exhausted, the eight countries will propose a fresh set of names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Difference with Atlantic Naming<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Unlike the Naming list of Hurricanes in the Atlantic which is rotated every few years, the name list of cyclones in the Indian Ocean is new every time.<\/li>\n<li>But, there are some exceptions made to the Atlantic list.<\/li>\n<li>Hurricanes that cause excessive death and destruction are retired from the list and are replaced by new ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Why Name Cyclones At All?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Naming a cyclone makes it easy to report it in the media.<\/li>\n<li>Also, technical terms and numbers which were used earlier are difficult to communicate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Criteria<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the general public can propose a name to be included in the list.<\/li>\n<li>But, it must follow certain criteria &#8211; the proposed name should not be culturally sensitive; it should be easy to communicate when broadcasted; and it should not have an inflammatory meaning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tropical Cyclones<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tropical Cyclones are massive rotating storm systems.<\/li>\n<li>They have a low-pressure centre called the \u2018eye of the storm\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>The winds in a tropical cyclone blow in a counterclockwise direction in the Northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.<\/li>\n<li>Coriolis force plays an important role in the formation of these cyclones.<\/li>\n<li>Thus, these cyclones are formed in latitudes between 10 and 30 degree N and S of the equator.<\/li>\n<li>They are not formed near the equator as the Coriolis force is zero at the equator.<\/li>\n<li>A depression first emerges in the sea and then transforms into a tropical cyclone.<\/li>\n<li>It then moves towards the land where there is low pressure and makes landfall.<\/li>\n<li>Tropical cyclones bring with them destructive forces &#8211; high-speed winds, sea surge, and torrential rains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Categories of Cyclones:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The IMD uses seven different classifications for cyclones within the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li>They are based on the sustained wind speeds of the storm system.<\/li>\n<li>The classifications are as below:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1584\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/classification-of-Cyclonic-Storm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/classification-of-Cyclonic-Storm.png\" alt=\"Categories of Cyclones\" width=\"550\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/classification-of-Cyclonic-Storm.png 644w, https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/classification-of-Cyclonic-Storm-300x181.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Categories of Cyclones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018<strong>Fani<\/strong>\u2019 was classified as Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm.
