{"id":1550,"date":"2019-04-22T11:41:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-22T06:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1550"},"modified":"2019-04-22T11:41:58","modified_gmt":"2019-04-22T06:11:58","slug":"ganga-is-home-to-large-population-of-organisms-with-antibacterial-properties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/ganga-is-home-to-large-population-of-organisms-with-antibacterial-properties\/","title":{"rendered":"Ganga is Home to Large Population of Organisms with Antibacterial Properties"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>In News<\/h3>\n<p>A recent study has found that the Ganga river ha large proportions of organisms with antibacterial properties which can be used to create new antibacterial pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<h3>In-Detail<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The study,\u2018\u00a0Assessment of Water Quality and Sediment To Understand Special Properties of River Ganga,\u2019 was commissioned by the Union Ministry of Water Resources.<\/li>\n<li>It was conducted by the National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute (NEERI) of CSIR.<\/li>\n<li>NEERI assessed the water quality for radiological, biological and microbiological parameters of the River at Bhagirathi and at 20 other stations.<\/li>\n<li>It was found that organisms with antibacterial properties are in abundance in the upper reaches of the river in the Himalayas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Study<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For the study, five pathogenicspecies of bacteria were isolated and their numbers were compared with bacteriophages.<\/li>\n<li>Bacteriophages are viruses that kill bacteria and often live in close proximity to bacteria.<\/li>\n<li>In the Ganga, the numbers of bacteriophages were 3 times more than the bacteria.<\/li>\n<li>Also, it was found that certain bacteriophages are unique to the Ganga.<\/li>\n<li>Around 1,100 bacteriophages are identified in the river.<\/li>\n<li>As per the study, there are 33% more bacteriophages between Gomukh to Tehri than between Mana to Haridwar, and Bijnor to Varanasi.<\/li>\n<li>About 200 years ago, the British colonial scientists had noted the unique microbial life of the Ganga and its putrefaction abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier, researchers from IIT Roorkee isolated a super-phage for its lysine protein.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Apart from the water that it provides to millions, the Ganga river has more reasons to be preserved and purified.<\/li>\n<li>The efforts to clean the river has been going at a snails pace for decades.<\/li>\n<li>It is time the mismanagement of the cleaning process needs to stop and authorities have to show intent in cleaning the river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In News A recent study has found that the Ganga river ha large proportions of organisms with antibacterial properties which can be used to create <a class=\"mh-excerpt-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/ganga-is-home-to-large-population-of-organisms-with-antibacterial-properties\/\" title=\"Ganga is Home to Large Population of Organisms with Antibacterial Properties\">    [read more]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1551,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[98],"tags":[99,158,159],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.9 -
