{"id":1438,"date":"2019-03-28T17:50:40","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T12:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1438"},"modified":"2019-03-28T17:50:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T12:20:40","slug":"anti-satellite-missile-a-new-weapon-in-indias-kitty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/anti-satellite-missile-a-new-weapon-in-indias-kitty\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Satellite Missile &#8211; A New Weapon In India\u2019s Kitty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>India has successfully test-fired an anti-satellite missile (ASAT) that has the capacity to destroy any satellite flying in the orbit.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mission Shakthi :-<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tentatively named Mission Shakti, the test is a technology demonstration of India\u2019s ability to develop and deploy anti-satellite missile technology which only a select few countries possess.<\/li>\n<li>Other than India, only the USA, Russia and China have missiles that can target and destroy a satellite.<\/li>\n<li>The mission involved launching of a Ballistic Missile Defence Missile from Abdul Kalam Test range in Odisha, which traveled 300km into the Low Earth Orbit and hit a live satellite within three minutes of the launch.<\/li>\n<li>The satellite is a functional satellite of India, probably Microsat-R of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).<\/li>\n<li>The missile carried no warhead.<\/li>\n<li>Instead, the technology utilized was \u2018kinetic kill\u2019 where the missile\u2019s kinetic force penetrates the satellite and destroys it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What About Space Debris?<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike China\u2019s anti-satellite missile test that hit a satellite in 800km orbit caused thousands of small and major space debris, India chose its target carefully to minimize the impact of the debris.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As per DRDO, the debris of the satellite will fall back into Earth\u2019s atmosphere and burn up.<\/li>\n<li>The debris caused by the Chinese test is still floating in the outer atmosphere posing a threat to space assets of all nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With careful choice, India demonstrated that it is a responsible nation.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Kinetic Kill?<\/h3>\n<p>As per scientists from DRDO, the choice of the kinetic kill was simply because India has proven capability in this technology.<\/p>\n<p>The other technologies are fly-by tests and jamming.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is the Missile Range?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the test, the choice of distance was 300 km.
