{"id":1412,"date":"2019-03-22T10:48:06","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T05:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/?p=1412"},"modified":"2019-03-22T10:48:06","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T05:18:06","slug":"west-nile-fever-a-new-threat-to-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/west-nile-fever-a-new-threat-to-india\/","title":{"rendered":"West Nile Fever &#8211; A New Threat To India?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, a child in Kozhikode, Kerala died of West Nile Fever, an unfamiliar disease to India.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Is West Nile Virus ?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>West Nile Virus (<strong>WNV<\/strong>) is the cause of West Nile Fever.<\/li>\n<li>The virus is commonly spread through mosquitoes bites.<\/li>\n<li>It is found in almost all types of mosquitoes &#8211; <strong>Aedes, Culex, Anopheles, Culiesta, Mansonia, and Psorophora.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This disease is deadly as it occurs throughout the year unlike the seasonal diseases in India like <em>dengue<\/em>, <em>Chikungunya<\/em> and others.<\/li>\n<li>Other than mosquitoes, the virus can be spread through blood transfusion, from infected mother to child or exposure to the virus in laboratories.<\/li>\n<li>The virus is known to not cause any infection when in contact with the infected person or animals. Physical contact does not transmit the virus.<\/li>\n<li>Also, eating infected animals did not show any infection if the meat is thoroughly cooked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Symptoms :\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Not all infected people carry the symptoms of the virus. Only 1 in 5 will show symptoms of the disease.<\/li>\n<li>The disease is dreaded as it has irreversible effects on the brain.<\/li>\n<li>The symptoms include &#8211; fever, headache, weakness etc.<\/li>\n<li>But, the WNV shows certain nervous system symptoms &#8211; disorientation, convulsion, stupor, loss of vision etc.<\/li>\n<li>The most affected people are old age persons, those with diabetes, cancer, and hypertension.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Origin and Its Spread :-<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As per World Health Organisation (WHO), the first case of<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> <a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/west-nile-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WNV infection<\/a><\/span> was detected in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1937 in Uganda<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>WNV is found across Africa, Europe, Middle East, West Asia and America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong>:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/resetting-of-ties-with-maldives\/\">Resetting of Ties with Maldives<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Current Status in India :-<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>The disease occurred sporadically in India.<\/li>\n<li>There is no sign of the disease being spread across the country.<\/li>\n<li>Majority of the cases in India are from the Northeast.<\/li>\n<li>As per experts from <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icmr.nic.in\/sites\/default\/files\/icmr_bulletins\/bujuly02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indian Council of Medical Research<\/a><\/span> (ICMR), the virus infection in a boy in Kerala is of academic interest. Also, they say that there is no worry that the virus will spread as it has poor transmission capability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Read Also<\/strong>:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classiciasacademy.com\/blog\/developing-countries-are-opposing-developed-countries-moves-at-wto\/\"><em>Developing Countries are Opposing Developed Countries Moves at WTO<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being Vig<\/em>ilant :-<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>But, the being vigilant to such threats is absolutely necessary.<\/li>\n<li>It is how the threat of Nipah and Zika have been controlled.<\/li>\n<li>Globally too, WHO states that epidemics from pathogens is one of the ten global health threats in 2019.\u00a0<strong>The others are:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Air Pollution and Climate Change<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Noncommunicable Disease<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Global Influenza Pandemic<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Fragile and Vulnerable Settings<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Antimicrobial Resistance<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Ebola and Other High Threat Pathogens<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Weak Primary Healthcare<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Vaccine Hesitancy<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Dengue<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>HIV<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>India being a tropical country coupled with a huge population, pathogens pose a great threat.
