National Initiative for Development and Harnessing Innovations(NIDHI)

  • NIDHI is an umbrella program for nurturing ideas and innovations (knowledge-based and technology-driven) into successful start-ups.

  • It aims to take forward student innovations in IEDC (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres) programme to commercialization stage and to accelerate the journey of idea to prototype by providing initial funding assistance.

  • NIDHI focuses on building a seamless and innovation driven entrepreneurial ecosystem especially by channelizing youth towards it and thereby bringing in the positive impact on the socio-economic development of the country.

  • The program aims to provide technological solutions not only to the pressing needs of the society but also targets to create new avenues for wealth and job creation.

  • The key stakeholders of NIDHI includes various departments and ministries of the central government, state governments, academic and R & D institutions, mentors, financial institutions, angel investors, venture capitalists, industry champions and private sectors.

MANAK (Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and Knowledge)

  • The INSPIRE Awards (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research), was renamed as MANAK (Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and Knowledge).

  • MANAK is an innovative programme sponsored and managed by the Department of Science & Technology for attraction of talent to Science.

  • The basic objective of MANAK is to attract talent to the study of science at an early age and thus build the required critical human resource pool for strengthening and expanding the Science & Technology system and R&D base.

  • It does not believe in conducting competitive exams for identification of talent at any level. It believes in and relies on the efficacy of the existing educational structure for identification of talent.

  • MANAK has three components:

  • Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS)

  • Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)

  • Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC)

Visiting Advanced Joint Research (VAJRA) Faculty scheme

  • It enables NRIs and overseas scientific community to participate and contribute to research and development in India.

  • It will be implemented by a statutory body called Science and Engineering Research Board(SERB).

  • Public funded academic institutions and national laboratories are eligible to host theVAJRA Faculty.

  • The Faculty can also be allowed to participate in other academic activities as agreed to by the host institution and the Faculty.

  • The residency period of the VAJRA Faculty in India would be for a minimum of 1 monthand a maximum of 3 months a year.

Devasthal Optical Telescope

  • It is India’s largest ground-based optical telescope.

  • The telescope is the product of an Indo-Belgian collaborative effort.

  • It is going to be operated by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences(ARIES), an autonomous research body under the Department of Science and Technology.

  • It will also be Asia’s largest ground-based optical telescope, succeeding the VainuBappuObservatory in Kavalur, Tamil Nadu.

  • It is a Photovoltaic integrated Micro Solar Dome, a simple innovative technology developed

  • To meet the lighting need for people who do not have access to reliable supply of electricity.

  • The dome will capture day light and concentrate the same inside a dark room in urbanslum or rural areas.
